Jellyfish Sunlight

Jellyfish Lake in Palau is home to an estimated 10 million Golden jellyfish, who all follow the sun as it traverses the sky. They do this every day because within their bodies live microscopic algae that photosynthesise producing sugars that the jellyfish then metabolise to make energy. It’s in the jellyfish’s best interest to keep its algae in bright sunlight to maximise the photosynthesis.

Contorted Shoal

Scad fish often school together and form dense shoals that contort and morph as they perceive the threat of predators. Each fish hoping that the safety in numbers will keep it from being someone’s next meal.

Deep Red Reef

In some places the reef disappears down into the depths below the reach of SCUBA Divers. Here the sea fans and corals grow to enormous sizes gently catching the drifting plankton as it flows by.

Barracuda in the Blue

These large fish are individually packed full of sharp teeth evolved to rip huge chunks of flesh from their prey. Barracuda of this species form large schools  in the hundreds that swim out in the open blue water. The fish are very interested in SCUBA divers and will come close to inspect you. Very unnerving as you never know what is going on behind those staring eyes…
